Restaurant Billing & Split Payments: The Complete A-to-Z Guide

Equal split, item split, or quantity split — and why the wrong one quietly overcharges someone at the table.

00

Three ways to split a bill

Each fits a different table situation — picking the wrong one is how someone ends up overpaying.

MethodHow it dividesBest for
Equal splitTotal ÷ number of guestsEveryone ordered roughly the same
Item splitSpecific dishes assigned to specific guestsOne guest ordered noticeably more
Quantity splitUnits of one shared dish divided across guestsA shared platter, split unevenly
01

Standard billing flow

  1. 1

Order is taken and KOT fired as normal

  2. 2

Guest asks for the bill — open the running order in the POS Terminal

  3. 3

Apply any discount or coupon before choosing how to split, so every share reflects it consistently

  4. 4

Choose Equal, Item, or Quantity split if the table needs one — or skip straight to payment for a single bill

  5. 5

Collect payment by cash, card, UPI, or a mix across guests, and close the order

02

Equal split, worked example

Four friends, one bill, nobody wants to itemize who had what.

Equal split · Table 94 guests
LineAmount
Bill total (tax included)₹1,200.00
Per guest (1200 ÷ 4)₹300.00
03

Item split, worked example

Same table, but one guest adds a ₹150 dessert. An equal split would charge everyone ₹37.50 extra for a dish they didn't eat — item split assigns it correctly.

Item split · Table 94 guests, 1 add-on dessert
GuestAssigned itemsOwes
Guest AShared items share + dessert (₹150)₹350.00
Guest BShared items share₹350.00
Guest CShared items share₹350.00
Guest DShared items share₹150.00
Total₹1,200.00

Why Guest D pays less

The ₹1,050 of shared items splits three ways here for illustration — a guest who left early or shared less of the common order pays only their agreed share of it, plus nothing from the dessert they never had.
04

Tax and discounts across a split

Per-guest share

(assigned item subtotal + proportional tax) − any discount applied to that guest's share

Common mistake

Applying a flat discount to the whole bill after deciding the split, then dividing the discount unevenly by hand — decide the split method first, apply the discount to the correct base (whole bill for equal split, individual items for item split), and let the totals compute from there.

Before closing a split bill, check:

✕

Discount applied after choosing the split, not before. Produces totals that don’t match what was verbally agreed at the table.

✕

Equal split used for an uneven order. The guest who ordered less notices immediately, and it’s an awkward conversation to have after the fact.

✕

Partial payments not reconciled to the same order. Each guest’s payment needs to close against the same original bill — separate, disconnected payments make refunds and reporting messy later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Equal split (the total divided evenly across guests), item split (specific dishes assigned to specific guests), and quantity split (a shared dish's units divided across guests) — each suits a different table situation.
