Restaurant Loyalty Program: How to Build One

The Business Case for Loyalty

Acquiring a new customer costs 5–7x more than retaining an existing one. A customer who visits 3 times is 5x more likely to become a regular than someone who visited once.

Yet most restaurants spend 90% of their marketing budget on customer acquisition and almost nothing on retention. A loyalty program flips that equation.

What Makes a Loyalty Program Work

Simplicity. If a customer needs to download an app, remember a login, or explain the program to a friend, they won't bother. The best loyalty programs are frictionless — sign up with a phone number, earn points automatically at billing, redeem with a single tap.

Visible progress. People are motivated by seeing how close they are to a reward. "You have 380 points. 120 more to get ₹50 off" is more powerful than "You have 380 points."

Meaningful rewards. A free appetizer after 5 visits feels generous. A 2% cashback on ₹50,000 spent doesn't. Design rewards that feel exciting, not transactional.

  • •₹100 spent = 10 points
  • •500 points = ₹50 off (effective 10% cashback)
  • •Bonus points on birthdays, referrals, and off-peak visits
This structure is easy to understand, rewards frequent visitors disproportionately, and gives you levers to drive behavior (bonus points Tuesday = fills slow days).

The Tier Model (For Higher-Volume Restaurants)

  • •Silver: 0–500 points — free drink on birthday
  • •Gold: 501–2000 points — 10% off every visit, priority table booking
  • •Platinum: 2001+ points — personal table host, exclusive menu preview
Tier models create aspiration. Customers in Silver want to reach Gold. They spend more to get there.

What to Avoid

Expiring points that customers forget about. Nothing destroys loyalty program trust faster than a "sorry, your points expired" message. If you must expire points, give 30-day warnings via SMS.

Rewards that require manager approval at the till. The cashier should be able to apply a loyalty reward in one tap. If it requires a manager override every time, staff will avoid it.

Separate apps. Your loyalty program should live inside your POS. RasoeeCloud's loyalty module tracks customer visits, points, and rewards automatically — no separate system, no separate app.

Loyalty Programme Examples

Points Earn 1 point for every ₹10 spent. 100 points = ₹50 off. Simple, and guests understand it instantly.

Visit-based "Your 6th coffee is free." Works well for cafés with frequent, small purchases.

Tiers Silver, Gold and Platinum based on yearly spend, with better benefits at each level. Suits restaurants with many regular high-value guests.

How to Measure Success

  • •Enrolment — What share of bills are linked to a loyalty member?
  • •Repeat rate — How many members return within 30 or 60 days?
  • •Visit frequency — Are members visiting more often than before?
  • •Average bill — Are members spending more per visit?
  • •Redemption rate — Are rewards being used, or forgotten?
If members don't redeem, the reward may be too hard to reach. If they redeem but don't return more often, the programme may only be giving away discounts.

Common Loyalty Mistakes

  • •Rewards that take too long to reach — Guests lose interest.
  • •Complicated rules that staff can't explain.
  • •Staff forgetting to enrol guests at billing.
  • •Rewards that stack with every other offer, wiping out margin.
  • •Never contacting members — A loyalty list is also your best marketing list.

Key Takeaways

  • •A loyalty programme should reward visits that would not otherwise happen.
  • •Points programmes are simple and suit most restaurants; tiers suit high-volume ones.
  • •Make enrolment and redemption automatic at billing.
  • •Measure enrolment, repeat rate, visit frequency and redemption every month.

Launching Your Program

Week 1: Set up the program in RasoeeCloud (takes 20 minutes) Week 2: Train all cashiers — they should explain the program to every customer at billing Week 3: Send a WhatsApp broadcast to existing customers announcing the launch Month 2: Review which rewards are being redeemed and adjust

The data you collect from your loyalty program — which customers visit most, which dishes they order, what times they come — is as valuable as the loyalty itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

They add too much friction — requiring an app download, a login, or explaining the program to staff every visit. The programs that actually get used sign customers up with just a phone number and award points automatically at billing.
